Modeling an Insects by Michael Rud Jakobsen aka Rud

    The First Cylinder
When I begin to model. I make a Cylinder for each part of the body, in this case there are three major parts, the upper body, the back of the body and the legs. The number segments and edges is depending on the poly count of the model I make, but the less I use to begin with the more control I have in the early model process.

In this case I start with 12 edges, a good number since I am going to cut off half of the cylinder, so that I only work with one half of the Mosquito, and then use symmetry to get the other half. For the head I make a sphere with 12 segments, a sphere because the head is round.

Note that the cylinder for the leg is only on 5 edges since that should be enough to give it a round shape ingame.

Tip of the day (The next thing I do is adding some default texture to the cylinder and animate the texture. At frame 1 the texture should have a opacity of 100 percent and at frame 100 it should be all transparent. This way I can easily move the animation bar to make my model transparent. This will help me see the reference pictures behind my model, when I am working.)
